Horses

Horses is the keeping, handling and working of horses, whether for draught, transport or their own sake, and it's separated from general livestock because almost nothing about them transfers.

They're prey animals with specialised digestion and feet that need constant attention, and each of those three facts drives a different half of the subject.

The engine that makes its own fuel

For several thousand years the horse was the most important piece of technology most people owned. It ploughed, hauled, carried, and it did it on grass, which meant the fuel grew where the work was and the machine reproduced itself.

That's not nostalgia. Working horses remain genuinely practical in places where fuel is expensive or unavailable, where ground is too soft or too steep for machinery, in forestry where light extraction matters, and on holdings small enough that a tractor never pays for itself.

What was lost when the machinery arrived was the knowledge, and it went quickly. Harness fitting, load management, ground driving, foot care and the handling that makes a horse safe to work with were common and are now specialised. That's a recoverable body of knowledge and it's the reason this has its own subject.

How a horse actually thinks

Everything about handling follows from one fact: this is a prey animal whose survival strategy is to notice a threat and leave.

That's why they react to sudden movement, to things appearing at the edge of vision, and to being approached where they can't see. Their eyes are placed for wide vision rather than depth, and they have blind spots directly in front and directly behind. Approaching from where you can be seen, and speaking so you're known to be there, prevents most of the startle responses people interpret as bad temper.

They're herd animals, which means they read hierarchy, take cues from others, and find isolation genuinely stressful. A horse alone is not a content horse, and a great many behavioural problems are that.

They learn by release of pressure and not by reward in the way a dog does. Ask, and stop asking the instant the horse responds, and the horse learns that response. Continuing to apply pressure after a correct response teaches nothing except that responding doesn't help. That single principle underlies nearly all sound horsemanship.

And they remember, particularly frightening experiences. Time invested in making early handling calm pays for the animal's whole life, and a bad experience takes far longer to undo than to cause.

Feet, which is where most trouble lives

The old saying about no foot, no horse is literal, and hoof problems are the most common reason a horse cannot work.

The hoof grows continuously, like a nail, and wears down naturally on hard abrasive ground. On soft ground or with limited movement it grows faster than it wears, and unbalanced or overgrown feet change how the whole limb loads, which causes damage further up. Regular trimming isn't cosmetic.

Shoeing protects the hoof where work exceeds what it can wear or where extra grip is needed, and it isn't automatically necessary. Whether a horse works better shod or barefoot depends on the ground, the workload and the individual, and both camps overstate their case.

Daily picking out is the highest-value routine in horse keeping. It removes packed material, reveals damage early, and gives you a daily look at a structure that tells you a great deal about the animal's health.

Laminitis is the condition worth understanding before you keep one. It's inflammation within the hoof, it's extremely painful, it can be permanently damaging, and it's frequently triggered by diet, particularly by rich pasture. It's largely preventable by management, which is exactly why the feeding section matters.

Feeding a hindgut fermenter

A horse's digestion is unusual and it's the reason most feeding problems happen.

They evolved to eat small amounts of fibrous material almost continuously, and the fermentation that extracts the nutrition happens in the hindgut. That means long periods without food are actively harmful, and large concentrated meals are the opposite of what the system is built for.

So forage is the foundation, not the filler. Grass, hay or equivalent should be the bulk of the diet, available for most of the day. Concentrated feed is a supplement for horses in real work, and it should be fed little and often if at all.

They cannot vomit, which makes colic, abdominal pain from digestive disturbance, both common and serious. Sudden changes of feed, poor quality forage, insufficient water, and long gaps between meals are the usual triggers. Any change to a horse's diet is made gradually over days, for that reason.

Rich pasture is a genuine hazard and not a treat, particularly for certain types and at certain times of year, because of the laminitis link. Restricting access, in place of providing unlimited grazing, is frequently the correct management and it's counterintuitive.

Harness, load and working

Working a horse is a skill with a body of knowledge behind it, and the fitting of the equipment is most of it.

Harness has to fit the individual animal. A collar that doesn't match the shoulder concentrates pressure and causes sores that put a horse out of work for weeks, and the damage accumulates invisibly before it appears. Checking fit, checking the animal afterwards, and keeping the leather in condition are the routine that prevents it.

There are two broad systems. A collar transfers load through the shoulders and is what allows heavy draught. A breastcollar sits across the chest, is simpler and lighter, and suits lighter loads. Which is right depends on the work.

Load is about more than weight. Rolling resistance, gradient, surface and the duration all change what's reasonable, and a load that's fine on level firm ground is not fine on a slope or in mud. Horses will try beyond what's good for them, which puts the judgement entirely on the handler.

Condition the animal for the work as you would a person: build up gradually, allow recovery, and watch for the signs of a horse that's tired and not unwilling.

Health, and knowing what is urgent

Most horse health is prevention and observation, and a small number of things are genuine emergencies.

The daily look is the mechanism: how the horse stands, moves and eats, whether it's drinking, what the dung looks like, whether it's separate from the others. Horses are stoic and hide discomfort, so the deviations are small and worth taking seriously.

Colic, severe lameness, a wound near a joint, difficulty breathing, and a horse that's cast or unable to rise are all urgent. Colic in particular can escalate quickly and is the one where hours matter.

Parasite management is grazing management as much as it is treatment. Rotation, keeping the density sensible, and picking up dung do a great deal, and relying on chemistry alone is what drives resistance.

Teeth are the quiet one. They wear unevenly, develop sharp edges, and make eating painful long before the horse shows obvious signs. It's routine care that owners of other livestock don't expect.

What the commitment actually is

This is the honest section, and it belongs before anyone acquires one.

A horse lives a long time, frequently twenty-five years or more, and needs daily care for all of it whether or not it's being used, whether or not you're well, and whether or not it's convenient. There's no equivalent of leaving a machine in the shed.

They need company. A single horse alone is a welfare problem, so the practical unit is usually two, and that doubles everything.

They need land, and specifically land managed for horses, which is not the same as land that grows grass well. Overgrazed, poached horse paddocks are extremely common and they're bad for the ground and for the animals.

And the ongoing costs are real: feet every few weeks, teeth, worming, veterinary care, feed through the gap, harness and equipment upkeep. None of it is optional. That's not a reason not to keep them, and it is a reason to decide with the facts in front of you.

The fuel grows where the work is. What's scarce is the knowledge, particularly harness fitting and load judgement, which is exactly what makes it worth recovering.
