Audit what you actually depend on
Before doing anything, find out what would stop. Most people have never listed it, and the list is always longer and stranger than expected.
Go through an ordinary day and write down what fails without an outside input. Water, heat, cooking, light, refrigeration, sanitation, communication, transport, income, medication, and every piece of food in the house. Against each, note where it comes from, how long you'd manage without it, and whether you could do anything about it yourself.
Then rank them by how much the loss would actually hurt and how likely it is. That ordering is personal: a household on tank water in a dry region has a different top item from a flat in a cold city, and copying somebody else's priorities is how people end up prepared for the wrong thing.
The audit is also where you discover the hidden dependencies, the things that quietly need power, or a card reader, or a working phone. Those are usually the surprises.

The order that works
There's a reasonably reliable sequence, and it's ordered by how fast the absence hurts.
Water first, always. Then warmth and shelter, in a cold climate, or shade and cooling in a hot one, because exposure is the next fastest thing to harm you. Then sanitation, because it becomes urgent within days and it's what turns a difficulty into an outbreak. Then food, which is the one everyone starts with and is genuinely further down the list than instinct suggests. Then power, communication and transport, which are enablers, not needs.
Within each, do the cheap resilient thing before the expensive elegant one. A stored volume of water and a way to treat it beats a filtration installation you haven't built. A warm room beats a heating system. Getting to a workable position on every item beats getting to an excellent position on one.
And go back around the loop. Second pass, improve each one. That produces steady progress where a single grand project produces a lot of expenditure and one capability.

Skills before equipment
The commonest and most expensive error in this subject is buying capability instead of learning it.
Equipment fails, wears out, needs parts, and is useless to someone who's never used it. Skill doesn't wear out, doesn't need storing, and adapts to whatever's actually to hand. A person who can preserve food, mend, build simply, grow something, treat water and handle a wound is more resilient than a person with a shed full of gear and no practice.
The test is whether you've done the thing, recently, under conditions resembling the ones you're preparing for. Reading about a method isn't the same as having done it, and the gap between the two shows up exactly when there's no margin for a learning curve.
There's a place for equipment, and it's a smaller and duller place than the marketing suggests. Tools you use often, maintain and can repair. Nothing whose first outing is the emergency.

Redundancy, and knowing what is a single point of failure
Resilience isn't having more of everything. It's making sure nothing important has exactly one way of happening.
Ask of each need: how many independent ways do I have to meet this? Water from a tank and a bore is two; from a tank and a tank is one, because they share a catchment and a failure. Cooking on gas and on wood is two. Cooking on two electric appliances is one.
The subtle version is a shared dependency underneath apparently separate systems. Several arrangements that all need power, or all need the road to be open, or all need one person's knowledge, are one arrangement wearing different clothes. That last one is the most common in households, and it's the easiest to fix by teaching somebody else.
Stored capacity is the crudest and most effective redundancy there is, and it buys the thing you need most in a disruption, which is time to think.

Doing it with other people
The isolated homestead is a modern image, and historically an unusual and fragile one. Nearly everything durable was done by a group.
The reason is straightforward: no household holds every skill, no household can cover every hour, and one injury or illness in a family of two removes half the labour. A neighbourhood where several people can do several things, and where tools and effort circulate, is more robust than any individual property regardless of how well equipped it is.
It also solves the specialisation problem. Becoming genuinely good at something takes time nobody has for everything, and the traditional answer was that different people were good at different things and traded. That still works, and it works better than everyone being mediocre at all of it.
The investment is in relationships before they're needed, which is unglamorous and is the actual work. A community that already helps each other with ordinary things will help with extraordinary ones. One assembled during a crisis mostly won't.

Money, and being honest about the trade
Self sufficiency is frequently sold as saving money, and treated that way it usually disappoints.
Producing something yourself trades money for time and effort, and whether that's a good trade depends on what your time is worth and what you enjoy. Some things pay back straightforwardly: preserving a glut, growing what's expensive and poor in the shops, repairing in place of replacing, cutting a recurring bill. Others cost more than buying and are worth doing for other reasons entirely.
Be clear which is which, because a household that thinks it's saving money while spending more eventually gives up, and it gives up on the things that were working too. Doing something because it's more secure, more satisfying or better quality is a perfectly good reason. Pretending it's cheaper when it isn't sets up a disappointment.
Income is itself a dependency, and it belongs in the audit. A household with a single income source has the same shape of problem as one with a single water source.
