Survival is what you do in the hours and days after something goes wrong, when the ordinary supports are gone and the aim is simply to still be alive and findable at the end of it.
Almost all of it is decided by a handful of early decisions, and most of those are about heat, water and staying where you can be found.
Ordinary things go wrong far more often than extraordinary ones
The word attracts a particular imagery, and the reality is duller and much more common. A car off a road in bad weather. A walk that took longer than planned. A boat with a dead engine. A house without power in a cold snap. A flood that closes every route out for a few days.
Those situations kill people, and they do it through the same short list every time: losing heat faster than the body can replace it, going without water, getting hurt and not being found, and making a bad decision early that closes off good options later.
So this isn't a subject about heroics. It's about knowing the order of the problems, knowing a small number of things well enough to do them cold and tired, and understanding which decisions are the ones that matter. If it all falls apart around you, that knowledge is what's left. Most of the time it just gets you through a bad night.

The order of the problems
Almost every survival situation is governed by the same priority list, and getting the order wrong is a classic and lethal error.
Air first, then serious bleeding, then body temperature, then water, then food. The reason to hold that order is that people reliably invert it: the instinct under stress is to look for food, which is the item you can go longest without, while losing heat, which will kill you in hours.
Temperature is the one that catches people out in temperate climates, because it doesn't need to be freezing. Wet and windy at a few degrees above freezing removes heat faster than dry cold does, and it's the ordinary condition of a bad day almost anywhere.
Above all of it sits thinking clearly. Panic, and the urge to do something rather than nothing, produce most of the fatal decisions. Stopping, taking stock, and deciding deliberately is the technique that makes every other one work.

Heat, and the four ways you lose it
Understanding how the body loses heat tells you what to do about it, and it removes the guesswork.
Conduction is heat drawn away by direct contact, and the ground is the great thief: lying on cold ground takes heat out far faster than cold air does, which is why insulation underneath you matters more than what's over you. Convection is heat carried off by moving air, which is why wind matters so much and why a windbreak is worth more than extra clothing. Radiation is heat leaving the body directly, which is what reflected heat and a fire address. Evaporation is heat lost as moisture leaves, which is why wet clothing is dangerous and why sweating into your layers on the walk out can kill you later.
That gives you the actions in order: get off the ground, get out of the wind, get dry or get the wet layer away from your skin, and only then think about adding heat.
Shelter follows from the same logic. The best shelter is small, insulated from the ground, out of the wind, and quick to build with what's around. A large elaborate structure you're still working on at dark is worse than a small poor one finished in daylight.

Water, and the risk of both choices
You'll need water long before you need food, and both drinking bad water and not drinking carry risk. The judgement is about which risk is nearer.
Finding it is mostly about reading ground: low points, the base of slopes, greener vegetation, animal trails converging, and the sound of it. Rain, dew and snow are all sources, and in cold conditions eating snow costs body heat, so melt it if you possibly can.
Treating it is the same sequence as anywhere: clear it, then disinfect it. Boiling is the most reliable method available with no supplies. Improvised filtration through cloth and sand removes sediment and does not make water safe on its own, and it's frequently presented as though it does.
Where treatment isn't possible at all, the honest position is that severe dehydration is a nearer and more certain danger than most waterborne illness, and that illness is survivable in a way dehydration eventually isn't. That's a judgement to make deliberately instead of a rule to apply.

Being found
Most people in trouble are rescued and not self-rescuing, and almost everything about being rescued is decided in advance or in the first hour.
The single most effective thing is done before you leave: telling someone where you're going and when you'll be back. A search that begins the same evening in a defined area is a different event from one that begins two days later across a region.
Then the decision that decides most outcomes: stay or move. Staying put is usually right when you're expected somewhere, when the terrain is difficult, when anyone's injured, or when you don't know where you are. Moving makes sense when nobody's looking, when you know the way and can manage it, or when staying puts you somewhere untenable. Wrong-way decisions here are what most often turn a rescue into a search.
Make yourself findable. Contrast, movement, height, and anything that doesn't look like the landscape. Threes are the recognised distress signal in most places, three shouts, three flashes, three of anything. Ground signals need to be large, geometric and high-contrast, because from the air a person is almost invisible and a shape is not.

Fire, and why it fails
Fire does more than warm you. It dries clothing, treats water, cooks, signals, deters animals and does a great deal for morale, which is not a trivial factor.
It fails for one reason far more often than any other: not enough preparation before the first spark. The whole progression from the finest tinder through kindling to fuel needs to be gathered, sorted and to hand first, and the amount needed is consistently underestimated, particularly of the small stuff.
Wet conditions are the real test, and the answers are known: dead standing wood in place of anything off the ground, the dry core of a split piece, resinous material, the underside of dense cover, and bark from the sheltered side of a trunk. A fire started under shelter, on a platform off wet ground, with a reflector behind it, works when an open one on the ground does not.
Carry more than one way of lighting it, keep one of them on your person and not in a pack, and practise with all of them before you need them. Methods that work reliably in a garden are the ones to have; methods that look impressive and rarely work are worse than nothing because they consume time you don't have.

Knowing where you are
Navigation is the skill that prevents the situation and not resolving it, and it's the one most degraded by carrying a phone.
Map and compass still work with no power, no signal and no satellites, and the underlying skill is not the instrument but the habit: knowing roughly where you are at all times, checking against the ground as you go, and noticing when what you see stops matching what you expected. People rarely get lost suddenly. They get lost gradually while assuming they aren't.
Without instruments, the sun, the stars and the landscape all give direction, and each has limits worth knowing instead of folklore. Terrain association, reading the shape of the ground against the map, is more reliable than any single trick.
If you do become disoriented, stop. Continuing while unsure is what turns being briefly unsure into being genuinely lost, and it takes you further from where anyone will look.
