The knowledge you cannot look up in the moment
Most practical knowledge can be found when you need it. This kind can't. Knowing that the season has turned early, that the weather is about to change, that a plant is worth picking now and not in three weeks, that a particular slope holds frost, comes from having watched the same ground over years.
That's why it thinned so fast. It was never written down in one place, because it was never a subject. It was carried by people who lived somewhere long enough to know it, and passed on by being outside together. Two generations of not doing that removes most of it, and no reference work replaces it.
What a library can do is give you the frameworks, what to watch, what the cycles are, how weather actually works, how the pieces of an ecosystem hold together, so that your own watching accumulates into knowledge instead of staying a set of impressions. The observing is still yours to do.

Natural Cycles & Seasons
Everything living runs on cycles, and most of them are more reliable than the calendar.
Day length is the steadiest signal there is. It varies not at all between years, and a great many plants and animals key their behaviour to it and not to temperature, which is why they aren't fooled by a warm spell in the way a gardener is. Temperature, rainfall and soil warmth vary enormously year to year, and the interplay between the fixed signal and the variable ones is what makes a season early or late.
Phenology is the practice of tracking what happens when: when a particular tree breaks bud, when a bird returns, when a certain plant flowers. Those observations are far better predictors for your own ground than a date, because they integrate everything the season has actually done. Old planting lore that keys sowing to the leafing of a local tree is doing exactly this, and it survives because it works.
Lunar and tidal cycles govern real things, coastal work above all, and are the subject of a great deal of folklore about planting whose evidence is mixed. The Ark's position is the same as everywhere: state what's observed, keep it separate from what's claimed, and record the measurement where one exists.

Weather & Climate
Weather is what the sky is doing this week. Climate is what it does over decades. Confusing them is behind most bad decisions about where to build, what to plant and when.
Reading weather without a forecast is a real and learnable skill: cloud types and the order they arrive in, wind shifting direction, falling or rising pressure, how sound carries, what the animals do. None of it is mystical. Cloud sequence in particular is genuinely predictive, because the cloud types associated with an approaching front arrive in a recognisable order over a recognisable number of hours.
Microclimate is where the practical value is. Aspect, slope, elevation, shelter, water and thermal mass create pockets on a single property that differ by more than the difference between regions. A south-facing wall, a hollow that collects cold air, a windbreak, a pond, each shifts what will grow and how it survives. Learning your own is worth more than any regional average.
Climate sets the envelope: how long the growing season is, how cold it gets, when the rain comes and whether it's reliable. That's what decides which strategies are even available to you, which is why an instruction written for one climate frequently makes no sense in another.

Foraging & Wild Plants
Wild food is the oldest food system there is, and for most of human history it was simply food.
The useful way in is by habitat and season, not by memorising a list. A given ground type at a given time of year produces a predictable set of things, and learning to read the habitat tells you what to expect before you find it. Start with a small number of plants you can identify beyond doubt in every season, including when they aren't flowering, and add slowly.
Wild plants are useful for far more than eating: fibre for cordage, dye, tinder, medicine, feed, and material for building and basketry. A plant dismissed as a weed frequently has three uses that were common knowledge within living memory.
Harvest so the population survives you. Take a portion and leave the rest, avoid taking the whole of anything from one place, be careful with roots because taking a root ends that plant, and know what's rare or protected where you are. And consider where it's growing: roadsides, industrial ground and land treated with chemicals all put things into a plant that no washing removes.

Ecology & Biodiversity
An ecosystem is a set of relationships, and the practical value of understanding it is that you stop fighting things that were working for you.
Most of what a grower calls a pest has predators, and most of those predators need habitat, cover, flowering plants through the season, water, and somewhere to overwinter. A system with that habitat in it has a pest problem that self-corrects at a level you can live with. One without it has outbreaks and a permanent need for intervention.
Diversity is a stability mechanism in place of an aesthetic. A system with many species and many relationships absorbs a shock, a bad season, a disease, the loss of one plant, because something else covers the function. A simplified system has nothing to fall back on, which is why monocultures need so much support.
The other half of the subject is knowing what doesn't belong. Introduced species with no local checks on them can take over ground and are far cheaper to deal with early than late. What counts as invasive is entirely regional, so this is a local question with local answers.

Traditional & Indigenous Land Knowledge
Every inhabited landscape on earth has been read, worked and understood by people who lived in it for a very long time, and what they learned is the deepest body of place-specific knowledge that exists.
It's frequently more accurate than the general science for that particular place, because it was built by observation over generations in one location and not by generalising across many. Fire regimes, seasonal calendars, water reading, plant use, animal behaviour and the management practices that kept a landscape productive all sit in it.
Two things follow, and they matter. It's living knowledge belonging to peoples, not an abandoned resource to be collected, so the way in is through relationship, permission and proper attribution, not extraction. And it's specific: what's true of one country's landscape and its people is not transferable to another, so the useful move is learning whose knowledge belongs to the ground you're standing on.
Where it's been recorded with consent and published by the communities it belongs to, it's among the most valuable material in this whole library, and it's treated that way.

You can learn the frameworks from a book and you should not learn identification from one alone. Use a guide written for your own region, learn each plant across the whole year including when it isn't flowering, and get your identification confirmed by someone who knows the plants where you live before eating anything. Fungi in particular need a person in place of a page.
How do I read the weather without a forecast?
