Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies are preparations made from plants, used to support the body through ordinary illness and injury, and they're the oldest continuously practised medicine there's.

What a household actually needs from them is a small number of plants, prepared a few reliable ways, for complaints that were never going to need a clinic.

Knowledge that was ordinary, and then wasn't

For most of history the working knowledge of a dozen or so local plants sat in households instead of institutions. It wasn't folklore and it wasn't an alternative to anything. It was simply what you did about a cough, a burn, a cut that wouldn't settle, or a night nobody could sleep through.

It stopped being taught. Not all at once and not by conspiracy: it was displaced, generation by generation, as the pharmacy got closer and the grandmother got further away, and a body of tested practical knowledge became a hobby, then a suspicion, then a gap.

What's left in most households now is a cupboard of things that work and a complete dependence on the shelf they came from. The point of recovering this subject isn't to reject that shelf. It's to not be helpless when you can't reach it, and to understand what you're taking either way.

The categories a household needs, before any plant names

Start with the jobs rather than the plants. Every region on earth has plants that do these things, and which plant fills each slot depends entirely on where you live. A named starter list would be a list for somebody else.

  • Something for wounds.Cleaning, and then supporting a cut, graze or burn to close without infection.
  • Something for the gut.Ordinary upset in both directions, and the cramping that comes with it.
  • Something calming.For sleep, for nerves, and for the tension that turns a bad night into a bad week.
  • Something for a cough and a sore throat.Usually something soothing and mucilaginous.
  • Something for fever and chill.The plants that support the body through a fever instead of suppressing it.
  • Something topical for pain and swelling.Sprains, bruises, aching joints and stiffness.

Identification comes first, and it's not a formality

This is the step that carries the actual risk, and it's the one most easily skipped by someone confident they know what they picked. Several genuinely useful plants have lookalikes that range from useless to seriously dangerous, and in a few families the resemblance is close enough to have killed experienced foragers.

Identify to the species, not to the general look. Use more than one feature: leaf arrangement and shape, stem cross-section, smell when crushed, flower structure, root, and what it's growing in and beside. A plant matched on a single characteristic hasn't been identified.

Learn from someone who knows the plants where you're, and get your identification confirmed by them before you prepare anything. A regional guide for your own area beats a general one, and both beat certainty.

And if the identification isn't certain, it's a no. There's no version of this where an uncertain plant is worth the risk, because there's always another day and another plant.

The preparations, and what each one is actually for

The choice of preparation isn't tradition or preference. Different constituents dissolve in different things, so the preparation decides what you get out of the plant and what stays behind in it.

  • Infusion.Hot water poured over the soft parts, leaf and flower, and left covered. Water extracts the water-soluble constituents, and covering it keeps the volatile aromatics from leaving with the steam. Made fresh, used the same day.
  • Decoction.A simmer for the hard parts, root, bark and seed, because water needs time and heat to get into dense material at all.
  • Tincture.Steeped in alcohol over weeks. Alcohol pulls out what water can't, keeps for years, and concentrates the material, which means it also concentrates any error in the identification or the strength.
  • Infused oil, and the salve made from it.Fat extracts the fat-soluble constituents, which are frequently the ones that matter for skin. Water in the mix is what spoils it, so the plant material is dried first.
  • Poultice and compress.The plant applied directly, or a cloth soaked in the liquid. The oldest and simplest, and still the right answer for a great deal of topical work.
  • Syrup and honey.Sweetening a preparation to preserve it and to coat a throat, which is about preserving the preparation and making it palatable.

Harvest, drying and storage

When you pick governs how much is in the plant. As a general rule the aerial parts are strongest as the plant comes into flower, roots are strongest when the top growth has died back and the plant has put its reserves below ground, and bark and seed have their own windows. Learn the cycle of the plants you use instead of a calendar date, because the same plant runs months apart at different latitudes.

Dry fast enough to beat mould and slow enough to keep the volatile constituents. That means shade, moving air, and warmth without heat. The time this takes is governed by humidity more than anything else, so it runs from a couple of days somewhere dry to well over a week somewhere humid, and in a wet climate it may need a gentle heat source to be possible at all. Judge it by the material: leaf that crumbles instead of folding, root that snaps instead of bending.

Store dry, airtight, out of the light, and labelled with what it's and when it was picked. That last part is the difference between a store cupboard and a collection of unmarked jars, and undated material is worth throwing away, because you can't judge the strength of something whose age you don't know.

Dose, strength and keeping an honest record

Because potency genuinely varies between one harvest and the next, the safe practice is not a number. It is a habit.

Start at the low end of whatever your sources agree on, with a single preparation at a time so that you can tell what did what. Write down the plant, where and when it was picked, how it was prepared, how much was taken, and what happened. Within a season that record tells you more about your own material than any book can, and it's what turns this from following instructions into practising a craft.

Treat a strong reaction as information, and stop. And be more careful, not less, with anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, with children, with the very old, and with anyone already unwell enough to be on something else.

Working alongside conventional medicine, not around it

Herbal preparations interact with prescribed medicines, sometimes seriously. They can raise or lower how much of a drug reaches the blood, and the interactions that matter most are with the medicines where the margin is narrowest: blood thinners, heart medication, drugs that suppress the immune system, and anything for a psychiatric condition.

So tell your doctor or pharmacist what you're taking. Not for permission, and not to be talked out of it, but because they can't account for what they don't know about, and an interaction is a fact about chemistry, not a matter of opinion.

Do herbal remedies actually work?
Some do, some don't, and a great many have never been properly tested either way. A significant number of conventional medicines were isolated from plants in the first place, so the question isn't whether plants can be active. It's which plant, prepared how, for what, and at what strength. That's exactly the question this library is interested in, and it's why the honest answer to any individual remedy is the measurement, not the tradition.
How do I know I have the right plant?
By matching several features instead of one, by using a guide written for your own region, and by having it confirmed by someone who knows the plants where you live before you prepare anything. If the identification is not certain, do not use it. That rule costs you nothing but a day.
Can I take herbs alongside prescribed medicine?
Sometimes, and not without telling your doctor or pharmacist. Interactions are real, and they matter most with medicines that have a narrow margin: blood thinners, heart drugs, immune suppressants and psychiatric medication. This is a chemistry question, not a philosophical one.
Where should a complete beginner start?
With one plant that grows where you live, that you can identify beyond doubt, and that does something simple and topical. Learn it properly, prepare it a couple of ways, and use it. One plant known thoroughly is worth more than a shelf of jars you're unsure about, and it's how the knowledge was always passed on.
