Shoemaking

Shoemaking is the craft of making footwear that fits a particular foot and can be repaired, which is the difference between shoes that last years and shoes that are thrown away.

Almost everything about it follows from one decision: how the sole is attached, because that decides whether the shoe can ever be resoled.

The construction decides whether it is repairable

Footwear used to be an asset. It was made to a foot, resoled several times, and repaired until the upper genuinely failed, and a good pair lasted many years across several sets of soles.

What changed was construction rather than materials. A sole bonded directly to the upper cannot practically be replaced, so the shoe is finished when the sole is. A sole stitched to a welt can be removed and replaced repeatedly without touching the upper. Same leather, entirely different lifespan.

That's why this is worth knowing even for people who'll never make a pair. Recognising which construction you're looking at tells you whether a shoe is worth buying, worth repairing, or destined for landfill, and the repairs that extend a shoe's life several-fold are within reach of anyone.

The foot, and why fit is the whole thing

A badly fitting shoe damages the foot, and feet that hurt stop a person doing everything else in this library.

Feet are not symmetrical, they differ between left and right on the same person, and they change through the day, swelling with use and heat. They also change over years. Fitting to a measurement taken once, cold, in the morning, is how shoes end up too small.

Length is the measurement people take and width and volume are what actually cause problems. Two feet of identical length can need quite different shoes, and most off-the-shelf footwear offers one width per size.

The toe box has to let the toes spread, because that's what they do when weight goes on them. Shoes that taper to a point compress the forefoot and cause a long list of foot problems that were far less common when footwear was made to individual feet.

For working footwear, fit is a safety matter. Blisters, rubbing and instability on rough ground are how ordinary days become injuries.

The last, and why it exists

A last is a foot-shaped form that the shoe is built around, and it's the tool that makes the whole craft possible.

It isn't a copy of the foot. It's the shape the shoe needs to be to fit that foot when worn, which accounts for how the foot moves under load, how the material will stretch and settle, and what the shoe is for. That difference is the accumulated knowledge of the craft.

Making or adapting a last to an individual foot is what bespoke shoemaking is, and it's the reason a handmade shoe fits differently. Traditionally lasts were carved from timber and kept, so a customer's lasts were on the shelf for the next pair.

Lasting is the operation of pulling the upper over the last and fixing it there, and it's where the shape of the finished shoe is actually determined. It takes strength and judgement, and it's the step that most distinguishes practised work.

How the sole is attached

This single decision determines repairability, and it's the most useful thing to be able to recognise.

Welted construction stitches the upper and a welt strip together, then stitches the sole to the welt. Because the sole is attached to the welt and not to the upper, it can be removed and replaced many times without disturbing the shoe. It's more work to make, and it's why welted shoes last decades.

Stitchdown turns the upper outwards and stitches it directly to the sole. Simpler, common in traditional and country footwear, and repairable with more difficulty.

Cemented construction bonds the sole to the upper with adhesive. It's fast, cheap and produces a light flexible shoe, and it is effectively not repairable at any sensible cost. Most modern footwear is made this way.

Moulded and injected soles are formed directly onto the upper. Durable, waterproof and entirely unrepairable.

Traditional methods that need no machinery at all also exist: pegged construction, using wooden pegs that swell when damp and grip tighter, and hand-sewn turnshoes made inside out and turned, which is how most footwear was made for centuries.

Materials

Different parts of a shoe do different jobs and want different material, and using one leather throughout is a common mistake.

Uppers need to flex constantly without cracking, breathe, and hold their shape. That means a leather with the grain intact, of moderate thickness, from a part of the hide that isn't stretchy.

Soles need abrasion resistance and firmness, which means dense, firm, thick vegetable-tanned leather from the back of the hide, or rubber where grip and waterproofing matter more than tradition.

Between them sit the parts nobody sees and which decide how a shoe holds up: a stiffener at the heel, a reinforcement at the toe, and an insole that takes the stitching. Cheap footwear economises here first.

Thread is waxed linen or an equivalent, because the wax lubricates the thread through the hole, seals the stitch against water and holds tension while working.

Repairs worth learning first

Most of the value in this subject is in repair, not in making, and the common repairs are genuinely learnable.

Heels wear first and unevenly, and replacing a heel lift is the simplest and most valuable repair there is. Left too long, the wear moves into the heel block and then the upper, which turns a small job into a large one.

Resoling is the major repair and it's what welted construction exists for: the old sole comes off, a new one is stitched to the welt, and the shoe carries on. Doing it before the sole wears through to the welt is what keeps it possible.

Stitching repairs, on a burst seam or a torn upper, use the same saddle stitch as leatherwork, and doing it early stops a small failure spreading.

Conditioning is maintenance instead of repair and it does more than any of them. Leather dries out, cracks at the flex points and rots if kept damp. Regular conditioning, drying slowly away from heat, and using shoe trees to hold shape while drying extend a shoe's life more than anything else on this list.

Questions

How do I tell if shoes can be resoled?
Look at how the sole meets the upper. A visible line of stitching around the edge, joining the sole to a strip that runs between it and the upper, means welted construction and it can be resoled repeatedly. A smooth glued join with no stitching means cemented construction, which cannot practically be resoled. That single check tells you whether a pair is an asset or a consumable.
Can I make shoes without special equipment?
Yes, by the traditional hand methods. Turnshoes, sewn inside out and turned, need only a knife, an awl, needles and thread, and that's how most footwear was made for centuries. Pegged construction needs little more. What machinery buys is speed and consistency, not possibility.
Why do my shoes hurt even though the length is right?
Almost always width or volume, not length. Two feet of identical length can need very different shoes, and most manufactured footwear offers one width per size.
